What is CAME?
CAME is non-governmental organization and voluntary association of about 50 Croatian medical teachers. The main aim of the CAME is to improve medical education, undergraduate as well as postgraduate.
A history?
CAME was established in 1992 by the group of enthusiastic medical teachers from the Department of Educational Technology (EMC), Medical School, University of Zagreb. Working on the project "The using video and computer technology in continuing medical education for Primary Health Care workers", they had, very early, recognized the need for professionalism in medical education.
What are the main activities of CAME?
The activities of CAME are mostly aimed at further training of medical teachers. There are two main activities: formal courses covering basic of adult pedagogy and interactive workshops devoted to experienced teaching problems.
What about courses?
Formal courses titled "The art of medical education", are aimed for younger teachers who are just entering the field of medical education. They are organized twice a year for a group of about 25 participants and the educational methods are mostly learner-centered. Following items are usually covered: a psychology of learning and principles of adult learning, curriculum development, lecturing, clinical teaching and tutorials, small group learning, evaluation and assessment, current development in medical education. The participants are provided by diploma in medical education as an important prerequisite for teacher's advancement.
What about workshops?
The workshops are aimed to experienced teachers, they are subject focused, the main educational method is experiential learning and they lasts 2,5 day. Following subjects have been discussed until now: developing the six years curriculum, a lecture - the oldest craft of teachers, problem-based learning, learning from experience, cognitive psychology and medical education, writing educational materials, using video in medical education, assessment - oral and written, evaluation, integration of basic medical sciences, continuing medical education, assessment of clinical competence, clinical teaching, student's and teacher's relationships.
What are the differences between the courses and workshops?
The both activities are very well evaluated, they are complementary, but the workshops are connected with higher internal motivation, so it can be more important strategy for professional developments of the medical teachers.
Other activities?
There are several other activities aimed to the improvement of medical education:
- publishing the Newsletters,
- collecting medical education literature,
- making the relationships with the individuals and international bodies relevant to medical education,
- working on research projects and publishing them,
- developing distance learning materials
- providing the technical service (educational materials, equipment)
- providing individual support and giving advice in relation to personal interest
- representing and spreading the ideas of best medical education within the medical schools and educational community
What is a future of the CAME?
Development of Masters Program in Medical Education is the main goal of CAME in the future.
